World Hypertension Day 2024: Events and activity taking place around the world
World Hypertension Day will be marked on 17 May 2024, with May Measure Month (MMM), initiated in 2017 by the ISH, running from 1 May to 31 July 2024.
Both initiatives aim to highlight the importance of better prevention, detection and treatment of high blood pressure.
This year, the theme of World Hypertension Day was Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer, focusing on combatting low awareness rates worldwide, especially in low to middle income areas, and accurate blood pressure measurement methods.
Why not get involved? You can participate in this year’s campaign by sharing hypertension information and resources on social media, promoting individual blood pressure screenings, providing educational materials, and engaging with local and regional media.

Canadian Hypertension Coalition WHO HEARTS symposium
May 22, 2024, at 11 AM EST (Toronto)
Celebrate World Hypertension Day at a free 75-minute virtual symposium organised by Hypertension Canada and the Canadian Hypertension Coalition.
The event will feature presentations on the HEARTS program – a state-of-the-art primary care intervention to improve hypertension control developed by the World Health Organization – from the WHO, the Pan American Health Organisation, Kaiser Permanente and the Crowfoot Primary Care Network in Calgary.
The symposium discussion and Q&A will explore how HEARTS could be implemented in Canada.
The symposium to celebrate World Hypertension Day (May 17th) is significant given Canada’s declining rate of hypertension control.
HEARTS is based on the Kaiser Permanente hypertension intervention which improved hypertension control to 90% with reduced rates of stroke and heart disease. PAHO has successfully introduced HEARTS with 33 countries implementing the intervention. The PAHO intervention has expanded to include lipids and is planning additional health risks. Recently the Crowfoot Primary Care Network in Calgary has launched a Canadian version of HEARTS that includes home blood pressure monitoring.
