22 March 2024: Message from ISH Past President Maciej Tomaszewski

As Chair of the ISH Presidential Elections 2024 Committee, I am delighted to announce that Professor George Stergiou will be the next President of the International Society of Hypertension (2024-2026).

President-Elect Professor Stergiou will take up the Presidential office at the conclusion of the ISH 2024 meeting in Cartagena in September 2024, succeeding the current President, Professor Bryan Williams.

Professor Stergiou holds a senior academic position at the University of Athens. He is a clinically active senior physician with both in-patient and out-patient commitments in the Third University Department of Medicine, at Sotiria Hospital in Athens.

He was elected to the ISH Council in 2018. He currently serves on the ISH Council and the Executive Committee as the ISH Secretary. He has been instrumental to the development of many successful initiatives of the Society including ISH Guidelines 2020, ISH Position Papers 2022-2024 and collaborations with our strategic partners including European Society of Hypertension (e.g. via ESH Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring and Cardiovascular Variability).

Professor Stergiou is a world-leading expert in hypertension. He has made major contributions to the development and implementation of out-of-office blood pressure measurements in diagnosis of hypertension and monitoring of antihypertensive treatment. Through his research programme and education Professor Stergiou has been championing the importance of standardised blood pressure measurements protocols and their integration into clinical practice. He has pioneered a widespread free-of-costs access to top-quality educational materials on blood pressure measurements methodologies and technologies to healthcare professionals around the globe through the development of STRIDE BP platform.

Professor Stergiou said: “It is a great privilege and honour to be elected as the next President of the ISH. It is also a great responsibility to fulfil the expectations for this major role. I am looking forward to working close with all the ISH Council members and our enthusiastic and dedicated ISH committees and friends for two productive and pleasant years to continue the successful pathway of ISH and expand its global impact.”

There have been 26 Presidents of the International Society of hypertension since it was founded in 1966.
