Professor Bryan Williams confirmed as President Elect of the International Society of Hypertension.

It’s my pleasure as Chair of the ISH Elections Committee to announce Professor Bryan Williams as the next President of the International Society of Hypertension (2022-2024).

Bryan is a distinguished hypertension researcher and clinician. Alongside his outstanding academic record, he has a wealth of experience of working with policy makers and leading world-class research, including his current role as Chair of Medicine at University College London (UCL) and Director, and Board Member at UCL Hospitals.

As a member of the ISH Council since 2018, Bryan currently holds the position of Secretary of the Society (2020-2022). He has held several varied senior leadership roles including those within ISH Affiliated Societies – President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society and Chairman of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Council on Hypertension.

Bryan has a strong record in mentoring and training many younger clinicians and scientists in the field of hypertension, from all over the world. Itself, a personal driver for him in his own words “to make the ISH even more inclusive, better representing the rich diversity of its membership, which can only make the ISH stronger, more relevant”.

Professor Williams said that “It is, of course, a great personal honour to be elected President. To seek the support of colleagues that I have long admired, is a humbling experience. My decision to stand for election has been encouraged and inspired by the passion and commitment of fellow-ISH Council members, and the enthusiasm of our next generation of ISH leaders, to continue to develop the global impact and influence of the ISH”.

President-Elect Professor Williams will take up the Presidential office at the conclusion of the ISH 2022 meeting in Kyoto in October 2022.

There have been 25 Presidents of the International Society of hypertension since it was founded in 1966.
