ISH Officers part of Southern African Hypertension Society Congress
ISH members and officers were central to the recent Southern African Hypertension Society Biennial Congress held in Johannesburg from 16 to 18 August 2024.
ISH Academy lead Erika Jones and ISH Mentorship and Training Committee Chair Lebo Gafane-Matemane were part of the local organising faculty. ISH Past-President Alta Schutte was part of the international organising faculty.
This theme of the meeting was Controlling Hypertension in Southern Africa: The New Frontier and focused on cardiac and kidney disease, stroke, obesity, and genetics.Prof Jones presented on the topics of ‘Thiazide, thiazide-like and loop diuretics for hypertension in chronic kidney disease’, and ‘Blood pressure control in pregnancy: before, during and after’. She also chaired a plenary session on the future of hypertension management.
Prof Gafane-Matemane presented on biomarkers in hypertension in the plenary session on the future of hypertension management. She also chaired a plenary session on implementing changes to hypertension care in Africa, and a session on hypertension management in primary care.
Prof Schutte presented on the topics of the usefulness of salt substitutes, and early detection of hypertension and improving awareness of hypertension in primary care. She chaired the plenary session on Women and hypertension, and a plenary session on Pathogenesis of hypertension in Southern Africa.
