How did you become interested in research relating to Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease?

My areas of interest are global cardiovascular disease, hypertension and non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors. I became exposed to hypertension research during my early training in medicine and hope to continue this path.

Describe your research & the program/lab (info of your supervisor) that you are in?

My research focuses on determining the ratio of left ventricular hypertrophy in Vietnamese hypertensive patients with index Cornell/Strain and use of this instrument to predicting events. My supervisor is Prof. Tieng Hoang Anh, who is the Vice Head of the Department of Cardiology at the Hospital of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

What do you consider to be your substantial scientific contribution so far (provide Pubmed PMID if possible)?

The Cornell/Strain Index in my study provides a prognostic value for the events of hypertension when compared to the other indexes of left ventricular hypertrophy on electrocardiogram.

What is your favourite manuscript from a lab or mentor other than your own (provide Pubmed PMID if possible)?

“Evalution of NT-ProBNP in decompensated congestive heart failure” of Hoang Anh Tien, Huynh Van Minh, Le Thi Phuong Anh, Pham Nhu The (2006) in Circulation Journal, (70), Suppl I, pp. 24-26

Where do your research strengths lie? Why? What are your research weaknesses? How will you improve?

My research strength lies in biostatistics – I get to use SPSS for data processing. The skill that I enjoy the most is managing a teamwork led initiative.

Describe your unforgettable (proudest) moment in science, and the most challenging situation that you have had to overcome (lessons learnt) so far?

My proudest moment in science was presenting my first research in front of several renowned professors during my 4th year of medical training. The most challenging situation was when I had to answer several questions related to my research in front of a large panel.

At which conference did you first present? How was your experience?

My first presentation was as the Student Scientific Research conference of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, which I still remember vividly.

How did you learn about ISH/NIN and its activities?

Through its website and Facebook page.

What area(s) do you wish to specialize in the future?

I would like to specialize in cardiovascular medicine.

Who is your role model in Science? Why?

Prof. Tien Hoang Anh is my idol. He is a master clinician and researcher in the field of hypertension. He inspires young investigators and students and I am grateful for his mentorship.

What are your scientific goals? Advice for talented emerging scientists?

My goal is to become more involved with the ISH New Investigator Network and help with their various activities. My advice for emerging scientists is to keep enthusiastic and never give up.
