Why I attended the ISH Scientific Meeting

Blog by Arinola Akinnibosun I decided to attend ISH2024 because conferences like this offer something that’s hard to replicate elsewhere such as the opportunity to connect with people, exchange ideas, and step outside my usual way of thinking.

A key motivation for attending ISH2024 was the opportunity to network in a meaningful way. Meeting peers who are working on similar questions, as well as more senior leaders in the field, creates space for conversations that are difficult to replicate online. These interactions often lead to unexpected collaborations, or at the very least, new ways of approaching familiar problems. Another reason I attended was to share what I’ve been working on and to hear honest feedback. Presenting work to an international audience brings perspectives that I might not otherwise encounter. Suggestions from colleagues working in different settings or disciplines often highlight considerations I hadn’t fully thought through, and those discussions have helped me refine both my current projects and my future direction.

Equally valuable was hearing what others are doing, not only in terms of recent research findings, but also new methods and techniques. Learning how others approach similar challenges prompted me to think about how some of these ideas could be adapted to my own field and applied in practice. One particularly rewarding part of the meeting was being involved in a speed mentoring session that connected early-career researchers with senior colleagues, reinforcing the value ISH places on support and development across career stages.

Beyond the science, I think no conference experience is complete without sampling the local food. Trying new flavours and engaging with the local culture is always a great way to connect with colleagues outside the formal programme, and this was certainly true at ISH2024.

Overall, ISH2024 reminded me why attending international meetings remains such an important part of academic and research life.
