24 Sep 2025: The ISH was pleased to have a significant presence at the 2025 conference of the Nigeria Cardiac Society (NCS) and Pan-African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) from 17-19 September.
At the conference, in Abuja, Nigeria, ISH representatives including Africa Regional Advisory Group (RAG) Chair Alfred Doku (Ghana) presented an update on the development of new unified hypertension guidelines for hypertension in Africa.
The guidelines, being developed by the ISH Africa RAG, aim to harmonise hypertension care across the continent. Feedback received at the NCS/PASCAR meeting will shape the next stage of guideline development. A follow up meeting between the ISH Africa RAG and PASCAR has been organised.
In other sessions, long-time ISH member and contributor Ruan Kruger (South Africa) presented on hypertension in children during the plenary session, which was chaired by ISH member and NCS President Augustine Odili.
A key part of ISH involvement in the conference was an opportunity for mentorship for early career researchers.
A series of ‘Coffee with the Experts’ sessions at the ISH conference booth drew large interest from attendees, with young professionals able to connect with more experienced colleagues including Augustine Odili, Ruan Kruger, and Sani Mahmoud of the Nigerian Hypertension Society.
The ISH RAG also convened a RAG members’ meeting and volunteers engaged conference attendees at the ISH booth.
Particular thanks go to Maureen Uzochi Amaechi who organised the ISH booth at the conference, and ISH member and New Investigator Committee member Neusa Jessen who organised the ‘Coffee with the Experts’ sessions.
