11 Jul 2025: A joint summer school from the China Hypertension League (CHL), the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) and the International Society of Hypertension (ISH), concluded successfully in the city of Xining this month.
31 young and mid-career hypertension scholars from across China gathered for the international training programme, which built on the success of a 2019 ESH-CHL Summer School in Shanghai.
Across 3 days, the 2025 CHL/ESH/ISH Hypertension Joint Summer School comprised ten sessions: six delivered in Chinese and four in English. The programme covered:
Jiguang Wang, President of CHL, George Stergiou, President of ISH, and Thomas Weber, President of ESH, served as Co-Deans, personally delivering lectures in Xining.
They were joined by experts including CHL Past President Professor Zhaosu Wu, and CHL Vice Presidents Professors Nanfang Li, Zhiming Zhu, Xiongjing Jiang, Yuqing Zhang, and Yan Li, who collectively provided invaluable insights and mentorship.
Prof Wang said: “With over 250 million hypertensive patients in China, there is an urgent need to train young physicians in clinical and research. We appreciate the support from international and domestic societies and aim to make this summer school an annual event, fostering ongoing intergenerational and cross-border collaboration.
Prof Stergiou said: “This joint summer school by the Chinese, international and European hypertension societies is crucial. We must train China’s young physicians to become future leaders in hypertension, while addressing global control challenges through pragmatic technology-driven approaches - regional disparities persist despite available therapies.”
Prof Weber said: “This international summer school provides a vital platform for young scholars’ global collaboration. Emerging innovations in antihypertensive drugs and BP monitoring are transforming the field, while implementing guidelines remains the global challenge demanding scientific focus.”
Attendee Dr Yu Yan, from the Department of Cardiology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, said: “As a young researcher, communicating at the summer school was most valuable. I met many leading experts who provided excellent suggestions for my future work.”
Dr Yumin Qiu, from the Department of Cardiology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat- sen University, said: “This eye-opening summer school featured well-structured sessions covering essential topics like hypertension risk factors, secondary hypertension, therapies and case reports.”
The school was hosted by the Hainan Green Health Chronic Disease Research Institute.
