International Society of Hypertension

West China - Hypertension Control Teaching Workshops (supported by the ISH)

Report on workshops held in Xining, Qinghai Province and Changsha, Hunan Province

Report on workshops held in Xining, Qinghai Province (July 29) and in Changsha, Hunan Province (July 30)

Professor Ernesto Schriffin, previous President of the International Society of Hypertension from Montreal, Canada, and Professor Trefor Morgan from Melbourne, Australia were the invited ISH faculty.

The workshop in Xining was held on July 29th and was attended by about 200 people. The audience came from a wide cross-section of the medical community. The workshop was arranged as ‘lecture first, followed by discussion’.  Three lectures (50 minutes each, including simultaneous translation) were delivered consecutively by 2 international faculties and 1 Chinese faculty (see below, table 1).  After a 10 minute tea break, a 40 minute panel discussion, "Teaching Workshop for Hypertension Control in West China" was held.

Responses from the participants were very positive. It was said that the lectures were state-of-the-art with cutting-edge information on hypertension control, emphasizing ‘how to translate theory into practice’.  The Q&A session was extremely interactive, touching upon some important but difficult issues that the participants had met in their daily work.

Changsha Workshop, July 30th 2017.

The workshop in Changsha was held on July 30, 2017, with a similar format to that in Xining.  About 300 participants from Hunan province attended the workshop. Responses from the participants were as good as in Xining.

These workshops have been held in different parts of China for the last 10 years and have been very well received. They are designed to cover topics not usually supported by pharmaceutical companies and to emphasize the importance of hypertension as a community and government problem, and draw attention to the costs associated with high blood pressure and the potential for early intervention and prevention. As the ISH meeting will be held in Beijing in 2018 no workshops will be held in that year, but more are planned for 2020.

Awards Ceremony, July 29th 2017

On the evening of July 29th an Awards Ceremony was held before dinner to mark the 10th anniversary of the West China workshops.  Award presentations were made to Professor Schiffrin and Professor Morgan for their continuing participation in these workshops. Certificates were also presented in absentia to Professor Arakawa and Professor Rashid Rahman.

Thanks were given to all previous faculty and to ISH for their continuing support. Novartis were thanked for their continuing support. Certificates were also presented to Professor Zhaosu Wu and Professor Yuqing Zhang for their enthusiastic organization of the workshops.
